Kessler Rehabilitation Center, a key brand within Select Medical’s physical therapy network, identified Totowa, New Jersey, as a strategic location for an outpatient rehabilitation clinic to expand services throughout the Passaic Valley. Our team at RVA partnered closely with Select’s real estate group to realize this vision, securing a site within a newly developed retail complex on Union Boulevard. This location had been a long-standing goal for Kessler Rehabilitation to have a center in Totowa, and our involvement ensured the project moved forward as soon as the right retail environment became available.
Designed to complement Kessler’s Woodland Park clinic, the Totowa location was carefully selected to overcome access challenges posed by major transportation corridors such as Interstate 80. This strategic placement enhances patient reach and reinforces Kessler’s presence in the region. The site’s high visibility and dense population directly align with the brand’s growth objectives.
At RVA, we transformed a raw retail shell into a purpose-built, state-of-the-art outpatient rehabilitation facility. Our process involved orchestrating all core systems and vendors—HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and sprinklers—while ensuring every design decision met Kessler’s clinical requirements. Our project management team collaborated with a contractor who was experienced with our approach and familiar with the brand, streamlining communication and execution throughout the build.
Our unwavering focus remained on optimizing patient flow and providing flexible rehabilitation spaces for staff. Even within a new development, we encountered unforeseen infrastructure challenges, such as damaged condenser coils in the rooftop HVAC unit, which required swift scheduling adjustments and close coordination. Working directly with ownership, we resolved these issues promptly. When clinic leadership requested last-minute changes to the rehab area, our team responded quickly to ensure the project remained on track for a timely opening.

We addressed the unique challenges of first-generation retail construction by tailoring the environment to meet the needs of a location with an anticipated high patient volume. Kessler Rehabilitation had wanted a center located in Totowa for some time, and when a space became available, they moved quickly to initiate the project. With the high number of locations the RVA team rolls out, each one will have its own unique take on a challenge. For instance, the previously mentioned HVAC issue was an unforeseen complication originating from the manufacturer. However, RVA’s experience and extensive network of vendors and partners enabled us to resolve the issue efficiently.
The completed Totowa clinic extends Kessler Rehabilitation’s reach in the Passaic Valley, providing patients with improved access to focused rehabilitation in a prime setting.
